Course Summary
Initial Response to Barricades is an engaging 8-hour training course designed to prepare law enforcement and public safety professionals for the critical initial response to barricade incidents. Participants will learn how to safely stabilize the situation, reduce risk, preserve life, and effectively manage the incident until responsibility is transitioned to specialized resources.
With more than 30 years of law enforcement experience, including 17 years on a major metropolitan crisis negotiation team, veteran instructor John Woosnam uses real-world case studies, photographs, videos, and operational experience to examine the principles and strategies that guide an effective initial response to barricade situations.
Participants will gain the knowledge needed to recognize barricade incidents, establish effective containment, manage communications, apply de-escalation techniques, and coordinate a successful transition to SWAT and crisis negotiators. Emphasis is placed on sound decision-making, officer safety, and creating the time and space necessary for a safe and successful resolution.
